Venice bus crashes, 21 people including children die instantly... Cause of accident ‘unknown’

Local authorities announced that at least 21 people were killed on the spot and several others were injured when a bus rolled and crashed from an overpass in the outskirts of Venice, northern Italy, on the afternoon of the 3rd (local time).

 

Foreign media outlets including AP, AFP, and Reuters reported that a bus crashed on the Bempa overpass near Venice, northern Italy, killing at least 21 people, including 2 children, with 15 survivors. The number of injured is estimated at 12 to 40, depending on media reports, and at least two of them are said to be in critical condition. However, as local media reports that there are many serious injuries, there is a possibility that there will be more deaths. It is reported that several people are missing.

 

The bus involved in the accident was a regular bus that went off the road, fell near the railroad tracks in the Mestre area, and caught fire. However, local media reported that the cause of the accident was unclear.

The victims were local residents traveling on the regular route, but there were also tourists. The nationalities of the foreign casualties have not yet been announced.

 

Upon hearing the news of the accident, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed condolences, saying, “I am deeply saddened and the government will actively provide support for the dead and injured and monitor the situation.”

 

The Italian President's Office said that President Sergio Mattarella called the mayor of Venice to convey his condolences over the tragedy. Venetian authorities announced that they had blocked traffic on the Bempa overpass where the accident occurred, and that police and fire brigades were searching for survivors and transporting the injured to hospitals.
