Lockheed Martin's 5th generation stealth fighter F-35B, which the U.S. boasts, was "missing" while flying over the U.S. mainland.
According to AFP and others, an F-35B flying in South Carolina disappeared in the afternoon of the 17th local time.
The Charleston base, which has operated the aircraft, said the pilot escaped in an emergency when the cause was unknown, including whether it was broken, and the fighter has been missing so far on the 18th, a day later.
The base assumed that the fighter plane was flying in autopilot mode at the time of the accident, and that it would have continued to fly for a while even after the pilot escaped.
He added that the search was focused around two large lakes, north of Charleston, "based on the location finally identified."
The F-35B fighter jet is known to have difficulty identifying the flight path of the accident aircraft because it cannot be detected by radar due to its stealth function.
